Intro To Geophysics And Seismic Exploration

This course will emphasis the essential concepts required to understand how seismic data are acquired and processed prior to interpretation. Each participant will become familiar with the practical aspects of acquisition design, permitting procedures, field operations, data processing, and imaging. Topics will include: the history of and recent developments in seismic acquisition, added value and risk reduction associated with 3D versus 2D seismic data, seismic reflection principles, reservoir characterization and rock property imaging, and the use of 4D time lapsed surveys for reservoir monitoring purposes. Components involved in a 3D seismic exploration survey, including varying acoustic energy sources and receivers, safety and environmental issues and the public perception of seismic operations will also be discussed.
Kevin W. Werth is currently the Chief Geophysicist focusing on seismic program design efforts for Dawson Geophysical in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where he supports 2D, 3D and 4D seismic design and acquisition operations throughout the U.S. Kevin received his B.S. Degree in Liberal Arts at Hastings College in Nebraska (1980) and has completed post graduate Geology studies in Dallas, Texas (1984-1986). Kevin has worked for 35 years in the seismic industry. Most recently, Kevin has been involved with Seismic Design work from 1993-2002 with Western Geophysical in Denver, Midland and Oklahoma City and has spent the past 13 years with Dawson Geophysical Company in Oklahoma City as an Area Design Geophysicist and currently Chief Geophysicist.
