Activities & Events
We have loads of great activities and events that will keep you busy from first thing Saturday morning all the way through the closing social hour at our host hotel, the Doubletree by Hilton Wichita Airport, Tuesday afternoon. Please come a day early and choose to participate in either the horizontal drilling workshop or the field trip (suitable for guests and spouses!) to the Kansas Underground Salt Museum in Hutchison. The tour takes you 650 feet below ground, and stepping off the elevator you are suddenly standing in the middle of what was once a huge Permian sea. In addition to the geologic and mining features of this vast underground museum, you will find the storage facility equally fascinating. Because the temperature is constant and the air so highly desiccated, you can walk through the many historic Hollywood artifacts on display. Why wait for Sunday’s Icebreaker to catch up with old friends? Attend the Kansas Geological Society Shrimp Boil Saturday evening at the Wichita Petroleum Club!
Sunday’s offerings (the official kickoff day commencing with the Opening Ceremonies and Awards Presentations) include more workshops and another trip, to the Kansas Oil Museum in nearby El Dorado. The area is rich in the history of the early days of hydrocarbon exploration in the Mid-Continent, and you’ll be stepping back in time as you stroll in the recreated boom town or watch a rotary rig in action. You’ll be back to the hotel in plenty of time for the Opening Ceremonies and traditional Icebreaker party from 6:30 to 8:30 that evening.
